Scope
01
The Brief
Capturing the Craftsmanship Behind Kiran Gems
Kiran Gems required photography that could showcase the diamonds and the manufacturing expertise behind them. The assignment took our team to the company's factory in Surat, where we captured rough diamonds, machinery, and the skilled people involved in the manufacturing process.
The brief called for more than conventional product photographs. We wanted the images to communicate the precision, attention to detail, and craftsmanship associated with diamond manufacturing while giving the photographs a strong visual character.
Our approach combined technical photography with creative thinking to present both the raw material and the processes that contribute to the finished gemstone.

02
The Photography Challenge
How Do You Capture the Detail, Texture and Character of a Diamond?
Diamond photography presents a unique challenge. Rough diamonds have irregular forms, varied surfaces, and subtle details that require careful lighting and precise camera positioning to photograph effectively.
The factory environment introduced another dimension to the assignment. We needed to capture the manufacturing process and working environment while producing images that were visually engaging and suitable for brand communication.
The challenge was to balance accuracy with creativity — making the details of the diamonds visible while creating photographs that communicated the skill and precision behind the manufacturing process.
03
Concept Development
Finding the Visual Story Behind the Stone
We approached the Kiran Gems assignment by looking at the diamond beyond its finished appearance.
Rough diamonds offered an opportunity to explore texture, shape, surface detail and the natural character of each stone. The manufacturing environment added another layer to the story, showing the people, machinery and processes involved in working with these materials.
This became the creative foundation for the shoot. Instead of relying on one photographic treatment, we considered the diamonds and the factory as different subjects that could contribute to a broader visual narrative.
The objective was to make each photograph serve a purpose within the overall story of Kiran Gems.

01
Rough Diamond Photography
Revealing the Character of Unpolished Diamonds
Rough diamond photography requires a different approach from photographing finished jewellery. The stones do not rely on polished settings or finished designs to communicate their appeal. Their natural shapes, textures and surfaces become the focus.
For Kiran Gems, we photographed raw diamonds with attention to their individual characteristics. Lighting, backgrounds and camera positioning were carefully considered to reveal the stones' form and detail.
The aim was to show the diamonds as they were while creating images that brought their natural character into focus. This allowed the photographs to communicate the material itself, rather than only the final product it could become.
Creative Diamond Photography
Combining Technical Precision With Visual Exploration
Creative diamond photography depends on understanding how light interacts with the stone and how the surrounding composition influences its appearance.
For this project, we explored photographic treatments that could highlight the shapes and details of the rough diamonds while maintaining clarity and visual control. Lighting was a particularly important consideration because the stones needed to remain the focus of every frame.
The creative direction was built around the subject rather than an unnecessary visual effect. Backgrounds, framing and light were considered in relation to the diamonds, helping create photographs that were detailed, purposeful and suited to Kiran Gems' brand communication.
04
Photography Lighting & Backgrounds
Making Every Detail Visible
Lighting is one of the most important parts of diamond photography. The position, intensity, and direction of light influence how a stone's surfaces, textures, and edges appear in the final image.
For the Kiran Gems shoot, we carefully arranged lighting setups to bring out the distinctive details of the raw diamonds. Background selection and positioning were also considered to keep attention on the subject and avoid distracting visual elements.
This combination of lighting control and thoughtful composition helped us create photographs that showed the diamonds clearly while retaining the visual character required for a professional photography project.

Diamond Factory Photography
Bringing the Manufacturing Environment Into the Story
The Kiran Gems factory in Surat provided an important setting for the photography assignment. Beyond the diamonds themselves, we wanted to document the environment in which the manufacturing work takes place.
Our team photographed the factory, machinery, and skilled workers, capturing different aspects of the diamond manufacturing process. These images added context to the product photography by showing the people and equipment involved in the work.
The factory photographs helped broaden the visual story from individual gemstones to the manufacturing environment behind them, giving Kiran Gems a more comprehensive set of images for its brand communication.
05
Industrial Photography & Skilled Craftsmanship
Showing the People and Processes Behind the Product
Industrial photography can make technical processes easier to understand by documenting the environment, equipment, and people involved.
For Kiran Gems, the manufacturing facility was an essential part of the story. We captured the machinery and workers to present the practical side of diamond production alongside the close-up photography of the stones.
The creative challenge was to make these images informative without losing their visual appeal. By considering framing, lighting, and composition, we aimed to show the precision of the working environment and the human skill that forms part of the manufacturing process.

06
From Rough to Radiant
Creating a Visual Narrative of Diamond Manufacturing
The idea of moving from rough to radiant provided a natural thread connecting the different aspects of the project.
The rough diamond photographs focused on the raw material, while the factory images showed the manufacturing environment and the work involved in transforming diamonds. Together, these subjects created a broader picture of the industry.
Rather than treating every photograph as an isolated image, we considered how the collection could communicate a more complete story. This approach helped connect product detail with manufacturing expertise and gave the Kiran Gems photography project a clear creative direction.
07
Photography for Brand Communication
Turning Photographs Into Useful Brand Assets
Photography becomes more valuable when the images can support a brand's wider communication requirements.
For Kiran Gems, the project produced visual material focused on its diamonds and manufacturing facility. The photographs could help communicate the nature of the business, present the stones, and provide visual context for the work taking place at the factory.
Our approach considered both the quality of individual images and their role in presenting the company. This connected the photography assignment with the broader need for professional brand communication, without losing the technical detail that made the subjects distinctive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Brij Design Studio photographed rough diamonds at Kiran Gems' Surat factory and captured the manufacturing environment, including machinery and skilled workers. The project involved diamond photography, lighting setups, creative direction, and factory photography.
Rough diamond photography focuses on unpolished stones, their natural forms, surfaces, and individual characteristics. Finished jewellery photography often involves presenting diamonds within a designed piece of jewellery. Both require careful lighting and composition, but the subject and photographic approach can differ considerably.
Lighting affects how the shape, surface details, and edges of a diamond appear in a photograph. Careful light positioning helps reveal the characteristics of rough stones while controlling distracting reflections and shadows. The setup depends on the stone, its surface and the intended visual result.
Creative diamond photography combines technical product photography with deliberate choices around lighting, background, composition, and visual direction. The aim is to capture the stone accurately while producing images with a distinctive visual character suited to product presentation and brand communication.
Factory photography documents the environment, equipment, and people involved in diamond manufacturing. It adds context to product images by showing the working processes behind the stones and helps communicate the manufacturing side of a diamond business.
Industrial photography helps businesses present their facilities, processes, equipment, and workforce through clear visual material. These images can be used in company profiles, presentations, websites and other communication where the manufacturing environment is relevant to understanding the business.
Businesses should look for a photography team that understands the subject, lighting requirements, composition, and intended use of the images. For diamond photography, the ability to capture fine details while maintaining control over light and reflections is particularly important. Creative direction is also valuable when the project requires more than standard product documentation.
Brij Design Studio is based in Mumbai and offers creative photography as part of its broader design and brand communication work.
